The Knight Light Picture Books

Four bedtime stories with the same small hero. When a child is scared of the dark, they say a rhyme, drop a quarter into a coin-slotted lamp, and a fireplace appears out of nowhere — and from it marches a tiny Knight in silver with a lantern on his sword. His light drives the shadows back, and whatever was hiding in them turns out to be a visitor who has been keeping careful track of the child's fibs, and of their kindnesses too.

Shadows are creeping, the room isn't right,
Come forth, little Knight, with your sword with the light!
I'll pay with a quarter, ker-PLINK and ker-PLIGHT,
Protect me from darkness, and guard me tonight!

Knight Light

Picture book · the first in the series

Shadows creep past a boy's door at bedtime, so he tries the rhyme his grandmother taught him. The Knight's light reveals a BookWyrm — a small dragon with ivy whiskers, sandy feet, and crooked glasses — who has been riding in the boy's bookbag and knows exactly how much of his homework he really finished.

Coal Keeper

Picture book · a Christmas story

On a snowy December night the Knight brings a small elf in a tie — not a RibbonRanger, BugGlitch, or GearGoblin, but a CoalKeeper, who serves Captain Jinglebeard and weighs every fib against every kindness to decide where a name goes on the list. The boy's room-cleaning shortcuts are on record. So is the cold kitten he fed.

Sand Witch

Picture book

At a beach house, a boy's window swings open and in shuffles a SandWitch, crusted with bottle caps, wrappers, and yesterday's crusts. He left trash on her beach. He can clean it all up tonight — or take one bite of her and get a wish, along with the taste of every sandwich he has ever eaten. It is the silliest and stinkiest of the four.

Sky Panda

Picture book

A girl on a night flight through a thunderstorm calls the Knight from her seat. His lantern turns the lightning to lace, and out of the clouds drifts a Sky Panda — part whale, part bear, emerald-eyed — one of the guardians who guide planes home and keep SkyPirates away. She has noticed the cookies the girl kept from her brother, and the blanket she once gave a shivering old man.
