A school aboard an airship, where students learn Coding — magic downloaded into rings and cards and powered by memory. It opens on the first of September, and after that the doors shut.

A city of eight ships lashed together at the end of time. Coddiwomple is one of them. Its head is Jinglebeard, famous for defeating the notorious sky pirate Captain Teak.

Red snow that doesn't melt and, if you hold a flake in your palm, lifts off and rises back into the sky. It falls when someone changes what has already happened — and it gets into people.

The school week
Five days in five different ages, each with a teacher named for it — from Atlantian Mythology on Monday to Doctor class in the stone age on Friday, with flying lessons from a pair of Dwarfolk brothers in between.

Sky Pandas
Part whale, part bear, emerald-eyed guardians who guide airplanes and airships home, calm storms, and keep SkyPirates away. One of them carries new students to Coddiwomple.

The witches
Three sisters. Widow is a Sand Witch who keeps a shop that shouldn't be there and charges a toll of one bite. Weddy is a blind Cloud Witch who teaches healing. The third is the one Vane calls Grandmother.

The Little Knight
A tiny knight in silver with a lantern on his sword, who marches out of a fireplace when a scared child says the rhyme and pays a quarter. He is the thread that ties the four picture books together.

Airships
Everyone in Nowhen has one, from car-sized personal skiffs with fin sails to the Bad Encounter, the ship where Frog first meets Widow. Coddiwomple teaches its students to fly.
